Tinplate packaging cans, made from tinplate sheets, are widely used in food, daily necessities, industrial, and military packaging. Among these, food packaging takes the largest share. Main products include food cans, beverage cans (two-piece and three-piece), milk powder cans, aerosol cans, crown caps, easy-open lids, twist-off caps, chemical cans, and large steel drums over 200 liters. The main materials are tinplate and aluminum. Tinplate is made from thin steel sheets coated with tin, chrome, or protective films, while aluminum materials include aluminum sheets and foils.

Tinplate has excellent barrier properties — it blocks air, moisture, light, and UV rays, keeping products fresh for longer than plastic or paper packaging. With its elegant appearance, strong protection, and good printability, tinplate packaging plays an important role in the food industry. Products like tea cans, mooncake boxes, and milk powder tins are popular examples.

Globally, tinplate packaging makes up about 14% of all packaging in Japan and Europe, ranking third after paper and plastic. In the U.S., it ranks second, ahead of plastic. In China, tinplate packaging accounts for about 8% of total packaging materials. The fast growth of the food and FMCG industries is driving this demand.

Future tinplate packaging will focus more on food safety, lightweight design, and recycling. In the U.K., about two-thirds of steel cans are made from recycled materials, and in some European countries, the recycling rate exceeds 90%. This creates new requirements for stronger, more durable, and corrosion-resistant steel plates, especially for acidic food cans like those used for meat, vegetables, and soups.

As China’s tinplate recycling industry adjusts to overcapacity and competition, large enterprises are becoming leaders through advanced technology, better management, and stronger finances. These leading companies are promoting industry integration, improving quality standards, and moving toward large-scale, specialized, and group development, helping narrow the gap with international levels and enhancing brand and technological strength.
